Pheasants

In the distance is the sound of something 

falling,

hitting the ground,

a thump or a thud,

but not a crash.

It happens once and then I hear

a crow caw.

I am not really great at recognising bird song.

I sort of wish I was, but I don’t know why.

The noise happens again 

but this time I notice more of a pop. 

I am now almost certain they are shooting pheasants. 

Apparently pheasants are stupid.

Does that matter?
