1. The Cross
I would carry a cross
Made from guilt and sweat
I will extinguish all my loss
My journey will be my debt
The road will be my train
This town is off the rail
I will greet misery and pain
And do my best not to fail
My mind is a stormy sea
It’s an adventure of luck and hope
My fate will be what it will be
It’s time I let go of the rope.
2. I do not like the idea of love
It’s too complicated
Like a physics crossword for Einstein
Who hands it to a 5 year old child
Expecting a speedy conclusion
But the child just wants some crayons
I do not like idea of love
Because I do not know what an idea is
Is it just words that are too long or short
Can you build a picture of love
Like a jigsaw that’s never complete
I would find that very annoying
Therefore, I resign forthwith.
3. In the Fall
Those who stand up will screech and grate
Like whimpering MP’s in the Commons Pit
Yes, they may orate or grate or turn up late
But they will not be roasted like a pig on a spit
In the Fall
Daylight is a short shift
The night stamps out the light
The minds of millions cannot lift
It’s a conundrum too tired to fight
In the Fall
Trees will be sawn to the ground
The thundering collapse will scare the birds
Yet some will say there was no sound
Making this poem a complete waste of words

There’s a sardonic clarity to this - especially in the second part - that I really appreciated. Like someone peeling away all the romantic nonsense just to say, “Look, I’ve tried, and I’m done.”
The cross, the resignation, the collapse in fall… it all feels a little exhausted and raw, like someone still wrestling with meaning but already suspicious of the whole fight. Loved the shifting voice across the three. Especially the line: “The child just wants some crayons.” That hit.
