A List

Dogs and their expressions,

Holidays in Greece.

Taking music lessons,

The chance of global peace.

Sunlight on a summer dress,

Laughing with a friend.

Émigrés just playing chess,

Feeling on the mend.

Catching sight of someone new.

Eating toast and tea,

Walking in the morning dew,

Saying ‘us’ not ‘me’.

Breathing in the twilight air,

Having mouths to feed.

Showing someone that you care,

Teaching kids to read.

Taking time to just peruse,

Every Beatles tune.

Knowing that you’ve ‘owt to lose,

Looking at the moon.

Winter when the snowdrops peep,

Strolling hand in hand.

Teams of horses, flocks of sheep,

Buried toes in sand.

And of this list I can attest,

Not one has made me fearful,

I’ll grant that some of you have guessed,

They’re reasons to be cheerful.
