The Line of Beauty
By Silver Spun Sand
- 3337 reads
Their bodies lie entwined
by black-leaded stove;
the fire’s topaz glow
so cruelly belying
the imminent parting
cinereous-winged morning
will inevitably bring.
As the kindling crackles
a spark flies, so settles
on an ancient Turkish rug –
unseen it lies, smoulders
and so dies. Separation
does not wait its hour.
Tomorrow’s tears
burn behind their eyes,
tomorrow’s goodbyes,
in silence spoken,
will echo round the quayside
at dawn, to vie with kisses
tossed to the wind.
He pours a glass of wine –
she drinks him in, and takes
from the hearth
a charcoal twig...draws
the line of his shadow
as, softly, it falls, black
on gold, on fire-lit wall...
his funny, button nose –
those Rodin lips
that dimpled chin,
the slope of his shoulders;
in the weeks and months to come,
in her loneliness and longing, this
would keep her warm.
