Father, dearest Father, 
my wretched car won’t start...
tried everything dear, sweet Papa
from taking it apart
to thrashing it with birch twigs,
even filling it with petrol
but the blasted thing just sits there;
it’s enough to drive one mental!
 
So I need a teensy favour Dad, 
perhaps you could come over?
Feel really bad to put on you, 
I know it’s such a bother
but you’ve always been a wizard
when the frigging thing won’t go...
and like I said, you’ve fixed it now.
You’re a genius, you know!
 
Life can be a bitch, sometimes,
metaphorically speaking,
or putting it another way, 
I’ve just been done for speeding.
Trouble is, that Jag V12 
goes like the ruddy clappers;
it’s no surprise the engine’s shot, 
and now it’s bloody knackered!
 
Which leaves me in an awful fix, 
and admit I’m quite perplexed. 
Please don’t lose your temper, Dad.
My word, you do look vexed!
The problem is, I’m strapped for cash
and they fined me ninety quid
I’ll pay you back, I swear I will...
when I have that lottery win.
 
Father, dearest Father – 
know I set your senses reeling,
but I beg you, for the love of Pete, 
to climb down off the ceiling,
and please, feel free to chide me, 
I’ll gladly pay my penance. 
Snub me, bug me...anything,
bar scupper my inheritance.

HI Tina

This was such a fun poem to read - probably for you to write too. It brought memories of my dad bailing me out when I had car accidents when I first passed my test. I had two in the first month. He never criticised me - just called the cops and did the talking.

Fathers are like banks, but unlike banks nobody will come to their rescue. A nice and unusual contribution from you Tina, that shows that poetry can be fun.  Well done.

Tina,

I thought your poem was a slice of real life.  My daughters think their Dad is master of everything that is problematic in their lives.  Cars, decorating, general repairs, these all come under the heading Dad'll fix it!

Just one question, Tina, that last stanza ... does it mean Father's still painting the ceiling?  I've only just stopped singing it.
