Above New Radnor

Village isolated since the bypass built,
snuggling under the foothills
of Radnor Forest humps and dingles –
empty land, ideal for fighting training –
hard climbs and rifle ranges;
for the rambler views afar –
Pen-y-fan, Beacons’ double peak,
clear and stark on the horizon,
glinting sun piercing through the clouds;
moving on to look east and south-east –
a panorama spread below,
like a raised relief map,
wide valley and hills,
sunlight catching here and there,
and a stretching ‘sea’ of grey-blue crests.
