The Low Men

we are the low men
low in rank and status
we are the low men
we live with our low spice
a spousal plural
as strong as any drug
for we are of an age
with our grandparents
at their funeral
though we have drunk more
than they could afford
for their lifetime
We
Are
The
Low
Men
inside us is shame
and venomous pride
that will poison us
before we tug the forelock
and bend the knee
to the high-heidyins
who look so far down
upon us that we are
barely seen
Wearethelowmen
we whisper it in public
smashthewords
to get her
the
one
we
once
loved
we are not
shallow
our depths
are not still
we are not
hollow
nor are we stuffed
this land is wasted
blasted curséd
and
we are not
streetcorner
scarecrows
to frit
the unwary
we are the low men
but we are men

I don't think I have
I don't think I have understood all of this. But the emotion, the dignity and anger, the fighting off death every day. It is raw. I'm very glad this is pick of the day as I had missed it in Read
