Casanova would have loved

Those Italian mountains

With their masculine well

Built peaks, that seduced

The rambler in me with

Their tempting rugged

Charms.

 

From a distance ambiguous

Billowing silhouettes cast

Shadows across the brawn

Of this naked land, masking

Deceptive reality,

 

Those unpredictable crevasses

In folds steeply creased by

Jagged sharp uneven rocks,

Leaving naive wanders like

Myself dangerously scared

And crestfallen.

 

Endless seductive force

Enticing dulcet flow, it

Babbles clear; running

Water a symphony of

Audible burble, intoxicates

Me as drinking fine Italian

Wine...giving momentary

Satisfaction.

 

With arms outstretched,

Open palms cupping cool

Freshness, giving pure

Sustenance when faced

With unknown forbidding.

 

Rebellious breezes chill air,

As ghostly images reflected

In sun's rays are banished

Behind dark clouds that

Scour the bleak – yet

Flirtatious land.

 

In tapestry of memory

Recalling hushed reverie,

I felt excitement seep from

Every pore of my skin,

Revealing my exhilaration,

Those beautiful Italian

Mountains.

 

 

The photo is my own, taken

when on a three week holiday

in Northern Italy back in 1975.

 

Sadly the photo doesn't really do

the mountains justice they deserve

due to the old photo.

Hi Jack,

that holiday certainly did rock. Trekking up the mountain was hard going, but the view as you can see was worth it. The Itallians were so friendly too.

 Hi insert,

I have to admit it was one of the best holidays I've had, mainly because it was so different to anything I'd done before, in fact it was my first really long holiday. We not only trekked the mountains, but went up on the Dolomites where people were actually sunbathing on the snow, it was all very strange, but amazing. It was definitely a trip I won't forget in a hurry.

The photo does show the greatness and mystery of such vast mountains, and the difficulty of roaming and exploring even when young! Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

it certainly was a difficult trek, but so worth it in the end. The sheer drops were quite scary, but the rugged charm kept me going, and the view was out of this world, it's been etched on my memory, even after all this time, the photo also helps to remember too.

Hi Jacques,

you know I think you would have loved that trek and  those mountains. It was such a spiritual experience and brings you closer to not only nature, but also to the great heavens above. We do really have such a beautiful earth home in the grand scheme of the universe.

I'm so happy you found this poem inspiring, it means a lot to know this, and gives me encouragement to keep writing.

It's very clever the way you intermingled physical geography with human physical behaviour.

I think there's something special about mountains that brings out the best in us.

They certainly inspired you to write a very enjoyable poem.
