Perhaps

Three-score-and-ten,
a life time for a nation?
Perhaps.
Your book is some of our book,
your book says this land is yours,
perhaps.
The sore within the borders
is the Land you gave to Cain,
perhaps.
Yet all are Semites,
Jew and Arab alike,
perhaps.
The Sylheti boy dreams of
cricket, not creating Palestine,
perhaps.
The moneyed west sings ‘shalom’
and the word Islam means surrender,
perhaps.
We watch and worry,
hoping the slaughter will end,
perhaps.
Yet another nation as recompense
might salve our conscience,
perhaps.
Four-score or more,
the bloody end of a nation?
Perhaps.

Despair
If any nation should know better than to do this, it is Israel. Their actions in Gaza are beyond belief but it seems that a bit of local genocide isn't enough for them. They are dragging us all into the Book of Revelation.

Although good, your intro is more telling to me than the poem.
You have no answers, I have no interest. This has been a long time coming. The six day war should have settled everything, but itchy fingers on both sides just couldn't let it go. Religion and the guilt of the West do indeed have a lot to answer for ..... nothing new there. The biblical circle continues as it has done for many hundreds of years.
The real tradegy is the subsequent neglect of the needs of a Democratic, Christian nation in Eastern Europe by the very nation(s) that claim to be champions of democracy.
This is not an ill thought rant, just the sad thoughts of impotency.

Zelensky may be their only hope. Sure there is a right-wing
element. However, as you no doubt know much of the Republican resistance to Franco were on the right (just ask Portillo's dad). It would be sad to see it happen in UKr. (and yes, the Spanish still haven't shaken the shadow of the mini-General off completely, but they keep trying).
Two predictions by "pundits" I've read over the years have stuck in my mind:
WWIII will start in the Middle East
Europe will be at war with the USA in 50 years (written around 40 years ago as I recall)
Both seem entirely likely right now.
Thanks for replying, Ewan. :)

On the World Service last
Jordan is an ally of Israel but believes it possible Israel might push the Palestinians across the border. Jordan's population is the third most water deprived in the world as it is. On the World Service last night, someone from Jordan said their country was worried Israel might cut off their water altogether, as had happened in Gaza, therefore Israel's treatment of Gaza was a wake up call for Jordan to start desalination big time.
This isn't like Sudan or Ukraine. People from Sudan and Ukraine that I have heard, speak of wanting to go home when the war is over. The country whose name they bear will still be there
