Nineteen Eighty Four

I read it in the past when the year was to come,
and many more times since, in my psyche it has hung,
The world has changed, and changed once more,
since the world of technology kicked in the door.
I often wonder if Orwell was right,
when I’m dreaming of ‘1984’ at night.
The future imperfect , all over the place,
and smiling smugly, Big Brother’s face.
From out of the screens of every device,
The message that’s proffered , is not one that’s nice.
People like him, as usual smile smugly,
Our beautiful world has become so ugly.
You may be lonely, but you’re never alone,
with beeps and cheeps when you’re on the phone,
Social mediators, they’re checking you out,
Watching where you go, what you’re about.
Was Room 101 an actual place,
or an empty attic in a vacant space?
A cold dark place inside of your head,
the one that’s likely signposted for dread.
It’s maybe the door marked up as ‘Dystopia’
which we can’t see , due to severe myopia,
Orwell may have predicted our fate,
As we sail backwards from utopian state.

The Dystopian Dream
Nice one Mark!
Your words reflect exactly what I think every day, especially when my phone vibrates. I turned the sound down to zero as more brain cells died with every new notification jingle.
The world's been a bit of a mess since the day I was born and it's getting worse and worse. At least we no longer have to lie in rat-infested trenches to kill each other as a faceless somebody sitting at a computer screen somewhere can do it for us. Orwell's predictions were a bit mamby-pamby when we look at the reality we have today.
You've included some nice rhythm and rhyme too.
Good on you!
