Dog Days

Dog Days
Lingering on
the back seat,
threadbare tartan rug,
paw prints in paisley,
dust preserved in amber.
I think of chiffon,
fur coloured ebony,
this silent sepulchre,
canine memorial
for my aging mind.
The onset of nightfall,
dusk engulfing daylight,
stars lap at celestial shores,
dreams of ghost dogs;
stillness in lamentation.
I miss him.
I wrote this in March 2024 about grieving for my dog. This is an edited and updated version that I feel as though I can post now. Maybe it helps someone else. The original from two years ago was raw but did appear on X/Twitter. Some folks seemed to like it.
As much as I miss my border collie – Skye – and I do, there is the possibility of getting another dog later this year. Another border collie, probably.

Hi Paul
Hi Paul
Your poem is a lovely memorial to Skye. They always stay with you, loyal even after they've left. Little reminders pop up. I do hope you get another one, please tell us if you do.

Sadness
Your poem helped Paul, as I read it with sadness. We were at the vets today with one of our dogs. Time's running out for her. These things are never easy.

One thing about dogs
they are never moody always overjoyed to see you and overflowing with gratitude, unlike people that change and grow bitter over nothing, hold grudges judge and demand. Dogs do live up to the old adage 'mans best friend'. Sad sweet simple poem , 'stars lap at celestal shore' effective and full of meaning. You lost something you love thats deep pain that always leaves a deep scar, hate you have to bear it,
Great Work
