If (Just a Fantasy)

If I had a magic wand,
A genie’s lamp, a crystal ball,
I could undo time itself,
Unwind the threads that bind us all.
 
I could change my history,
Lighten the weight of endless grief,
Piece my heart back together,
And find some kind of sweet relief.
 
If I had a time machine,
Enchanted sword, or athame,                             
I would reverse all the clocks,
And start again my yesterday.
 
I could turn back endless tides,
And sail a very different course,
Rewrite Life’s cruellest chapters,
Learn to be guided by The Force.
 
If I had a book of spells,
A potion vial, Isildur's Bane,            
I could bewitch Death himself,
Make the Devil take back his pain.
 
I would rearrange the stars
To light the darkness that I fear,
Stand the fallen stones back up,
Hold rituals to bring you here.
 
If I were a sorcerer,
Wizard or witch, a seer or mage,
My heart would remain intact,
Life would be on another page.
 
But I do not have the power,
And this is just a fantasy -
I’m a naked emperor
In the kingdom of destiny.

I love rhyming poems, especially this one; no doubt this beautiful piece is born from what you are going through right now,  you are still in my prayers. 

   This was a real pleasure to read despite what inspired it, i hate you are having to endure such pain and threat, don't give up or give in, all my concern Ray

I seem to write poetry only in strict rhyme schemes these days - I think it is the mental challenge of having to manipulate the words and the rhythms that I enjoy!

Yes, this is a poem that reflects the losses and changes I have experienced over the last few years, and an admission at the end that we must learn to accept, rather than wishing we could undo what has been done, or retrieve what has been lost. It helps to 'get it out' by writing about it, though writing about it is not always easy.

When I was younger, I thought grief was linear, but as an adult I have learnt that it is not. Now I think of grief like the tide - it comes and goes, and sometimes the waves are bigger and stronger, and crash loudly against the harbour walls, and the loss is acutely painful and overwhelming, and sometimes the tide is low, and I can walk along the beach in peace, remembering fondly.

Wow, thank you!

I'm very proud of this one, it was hard to write emotionally, and I played with the rhymes and the structure for a few hours.

Sometimes fiction is easier to inhabit than reality.

Well done here, Jennifer. The 'what ifs' of life we cant' seem to shake. So universal, yet so damn personal. I like to think of 'what ifs' as a reminder to stay postive and push on no matter what.
