mother hill

mother hill
your soundless
fathomless age
reigns here
shivering sides
consistently giving
a little away –
a previous road
lost to your flank
having tackled your side
goat-like
sweating and impudent
i stop
for the thudding of my heart
booming within
my skull
like a grouse hunt
some
have ashes scattered here
though i suspect
the wind along your back
sees loved ones
quickly returned
as an unexpected kiss
of white and grey and bone
within your embrace
sleep
those of bronze
then iron
forgotten beneath
modern feet
rubber
stifling connection
we have lost so much
in two thousand years
of men
and bigotry
but there is kindness
in your craggy reach
the loving energy of the earth
still shining deep within
