Note: I am told that on the night of my birth there was a power cut. I am in the dark as to how long it lasted. This is how I imagine things happened.
On February the 1st 1935
I was due to be born but
quite unexpectedly
there was a power cut.
Would the poor midwife
be capable and handle
the imminent delivery
by the flame of a candle?
Dad, who was coming
with a railmen's torch,
sheltered from the rain
underneath the porch.
Constructive as ever
was smart Uncle Peter.
He told us to put money
in the electricity meter.
Panic was soon over;
while granddad snored,
normality returned
and light was restored.
