On The Path To A Place Long Gone
by Paul McCann
She was one of the invited few who had been given clues about the secret places that no one even knew existed . The paths to those Heritage lands were journeys of mystery that wonder . No map would take you to those hidden places where secret signposts led the way .
She had discovered knowledge in a natural way , just like all those other foot trekkers through history that had left the roads well-travelled to find places that were long gone , left and forgotten ...
It first began on the shortest day of the year when the sun shone down upon an opening in the ground . That’s where she found a staircase that went deep down underneath the ground and she could hear the gentle sound of angels singing .They seemed to be calling her , to come and follow and that’s when her journey began . She kept thinking maybe I will find that place where the singing comes from .
So, with nothing to do and places to go . off she went searching for that magic place . Along the way , she found hints that pointed the way to go . There were rock formations shaped like fingers to pathways that brought her back to the surface and into woods and glens and down to the sea where footprints lay in the sand , which brought her to boats on the bay . Then as made her way out to the sea she came to islands where caves sat at the foot of cliffs that pounded by the wind and waves .
The amazing thing was that she often found places of shelter, like empty wooden cabins that had food and clothing and tree houses with lookouts and messages left by those who had been there before .
It always excited her to discover that there had been other people who had also been searching for the places long gone . Just like her they had also been invited to be part of that journey , where ever it would end she never knew but there was no turning back now .
Once or twice, she found an old church there that had been built with pearls and seashells . Words of wisdom where written there to be shared by all for free . She kept walking northwards to places unique with not a sight of anyone to be seen .There were pelicans in pools and beautiful views of faraway places scattered between backdrops of ancient trees with huge open skies above . When she was out there alone in those open spaces life was almost indifferent to everyway . There was no compromise and yet she embraced the roads where she had been invited to walk .
She learnt how to cast a line with bait attached and catch a fish and around a campfire she would cook as trackers do .
She learnt how to survive and stayed alive making her way over rivers and the back of beyond and on the road to places long gone .
She walked through the Heritage Lands like people had done before who were now long gone .
.She found plants and weeds , never seen before and she heard angels singing in the wind that held her captive in a trance for a while ,
As she looked for the way to go , there were often signs to show the way .
When she got tired there was always a camel or a horse that would come to carry her for a while until she was strong .
She saw signs in the sky that not many could see , there were underground shelters as well built by people who were long gone but those little homes had many stories to tell . There were underground tunnels that went from home to home and warm underground springs to bathe in . So much to see that had never been seen with the sound of voices singing always calling her to come now , we are here , come now , we are near .
.
The days went on and she travelled on to that place long gone and not that far away . She was on the great adventure and every day she was eager to explore more and more to find a sign she wasn’t alone .
Now as old lady on the road to long gone it was getting harder for her to carry on and that’s when she came to a place where the angels carried her on the road to that place long gone and when she opened her eyes much to her surprise she was young again in the place she left behind with the sun shining down at the dawn of the day with those who had been long gone before she went away .At last she was home with those she called her own and they sang songs that are long gone today ..
The End

I like the magic and
I like the magic and discovery in your tale and if i may suggest a small change. Many of the paragraphs say the same thing, if you condense it, I think it will flow naturally and make a tighter story, but I do like where it goes.
