Dear John

Am I being cruel writing this
on Valentine's Day of all days?
Still we never did all that
hearts and flowers stuff, did we?
I don't need to say how sorry
I am it's over, finished, you gone -
it was always going to be this way once
our relationship became long-distance.
Thank you anyway for being my minder,
my carer and always there for me
unconditionally - I will never forget that
Do you remember the last thing you
said to me - how you wished we
had married? But then you were rather
addicted to marriage, after three already
and by then it was too late anyway..
I'm not prone to tears as you know
but just now, whilst trudging round
Sainsbury's, inexplicably and unexpectedly
I started to cry as I reached for a bottle
of rose - the only wine you would drink -
unlike me, colour-blind when it
comes to wine
So tonight on my own, I'll raise
my glass whilst remembering our
first `date' - England v Germany on TV -
you fussing with snacks and me
being far more obsessed with
David Beckham than with you;
just wishing you would stop talking
and let me drool...
So that's it, that's that, no more of
your awful jokes about making sweet love
in the afterlife - but then none of us
know for sure do we?
There that's better...I hear you chuckle now.
Rest in peace my friend. See you, John.
