A Girl Called Mattie (I.P.)

Jump low, jump high
as you dare through the waves;
try to catch your paper kite
as it swoops and it dives!
Swim...splish-splash –
just as quick as you can.
See that dolphin way out there?
Maybe ask him for a ride.
Run far, run fast, run wide;
too soon turns the tide
and the wind may change
and those castles in the sand
belong to yesterday.
But don’t you moan
and don’t you cry;
make them last – enjoy them
while you can. And, anyway,
before too long you’ll see
castles aren’t quite all
they’re cracked up to be...
so beware. Such is their fate
for the sea to claim them;
they who once stood,
built by man’s hand
out of stone and sweat,
will not be known again
in the ocean’s rise and fall,
leaving nothing behind
of their majesty...
save a slip of a girl,
called Mattie, who stood
looking for a ship
that never came in.
