If this were a dress-rehearsal,
In the real thing I’d say,
Come up and see me some time
with conviction, like Greta Garbo,
quip, ‘Of all the gin-joints
in all the world why
did you have to pick mine?
and get the accent right.
When I wasn’t working
I’d learn Russian and Mandarin...
paint like Cezanne, croon
like Bing... take up Real Tennis
and Snooker, like olives and oysters,
watch The Marathon Man
without switching off
when it got to the teeth bit.
Be a godmother and a better wife
not be afraid of standing up
in a plane in case I unbalance it...
never feel the need to gaze
on swarming stars, and wonder
which of them to wish upon
to be with my daughter...
one of these tumbling days.
