For when you are the ocean.

When you are the ocean,
fretful and listing,
everything else looks like the shore.
When you are the ocean,
diffuse, disparate,
everyone else looks like the shore.
You accomplish nothing by
attrition,
erosion.
Sometimes, you’ll seep into the sand
to be safe,
solid,
an intruder on the shore.
And you’ll blend in for a time
as who could guess
at the contents of your depths?
or what moon ensnares you.
Other times
you will retreat
into yourself
unattainable
in comfortable
turbulence.
When you are the ocean
restless,
untethered
you’ll wonder why you’re not the shore.
You’ll wonder why you’re not like them.
This is normal.
You are normal.
Every ocean tends a different wreck
and every shore a different corpse.
And you
like the ocean
like the shore
like erosion,
attrition,
gravity,
and the shifting sands
and seas of normal,
you,
you will go on.

What a wonderful piece! The pace and rhythm is so beautifully judged. A truly recognisable state of being described in a low key but highly effective way.

This is such a wonderful poem
This is such a wonderful poem and I love the layout, imagining the waves drifting in upon the shore then retreating.

am feeling a bit like this
am feeling a bit like this just now, maybe like the water murkily hiding under the sand if you dig down when the tide has gone out.
It's a beautiful poem, have read it lots. Only today realised how hopeful it is, before was overwhelmed by the rhythm
