Ariel views and roadside shadows,

No one to chalk mark victims,

all those lost, fallen in tank track.

close shot, violation of being.

 

History will wash their bones, in floods

of earthy reason, treatise and tenures;

weathered views will scour skeletons,

keen out wasteland of a nations heart

in tracts and tomes for the wise.

 

Tears do not make money; imprisons

those left in memory of shells and basements,

those who know,

occupied in a mindspace where I cannot go.

You are very kind. I suppose I'm re-visiting a theme: that we can research, guess, quantify and assess, but those (inc. me) who  read, document, and future archive this past  in some way, can never, ever know, and are thus protected from the horror of experience. Voice truly belongs to those in place, now, voices stolen by war.

Yes, the situation in Ukraine remains relentlessly grim and, made worse by the atrocities uncovered following the withdrawal of Russian forces. War is the ultimate in inhumanity. Your poem makes the point forcefully and artfully. Paul

A very fitting poem to remember the atrocities recently revealed, and the wrecking of Ukraine generally. We who are not there cannot know what it feels like but we are observing from a distance.

Kind of you to read, it will also be the distance of time when future "great works" attempt to unravel complexity of situation, personalities, power struggle, ideology. O, and transendence of monetary interests over all; ordinary folk might be mentioned, in passing.
