Our Journey of New Beginnings

We arrive from distant lands at a place where futures are chiselled

from blank ingots of youthful prospect

Anxious, hesitant, vulnerable and naïve

Camouflaging our anxiety with exuberance

A new term's intake, Dysoned seamlessly into the heady vacuum of
academe

A new beginning, ripe with opportunity among the gleaming spires

A blank canvas primed by centuries of learning, awaiting our tentative graffiti.

We bask in untried freedoms, shaping who we are and who we are not 

and then, in the final term, look back with considered regret

on what could have been had we only known

Then another new dawn, the brightest of them all, from gowned comfort

into glaring light, ceremoniously emptied into reality.

A whole new world awaits; sometimes kind and often not,

where responsibilities slowly and silently bleach out youthful disregard

until what remains is tempered resolution

Our journeys are long and eventful, and as we drink from the pool of life

we stare at our reflection and oft times dream of new beginnings

If only we had known.

If only we had known that every day is a new beginning.

But we were too busy drinking and staring
