anniversary of my death

I was away to nothing
But not quite
Not what you see
The silent conspiracy
Don’t poke your neb out
Until his neb was in
It was the toilets
The silent conspiracy
You tucked in your pants
When you had a chance
What you preyed to be
The silent conspiracy
Rummage in the trousers
Any old coin of grief
To join the other’s beef
The silent conspiracy
All good school men
Never had a girlfriend
Heaven by the side door
The silent conspiracy
Don’t dare turn around
Send flowers not weeds
Musty dung of human needs
The silent conspiracy
Fifty-seven years ago today
My stocking fell down a leg
Half-crown and sent on my way
The silent conspiracy
You can’t lock the door
Stay under the bedclothes
No more
The silent conspiracy
Rummaging around town
A wee scrap of life put down
Took as whore and wife
The silent conspiracy
Being so dirty
Never leaves you free
Mass offerings up of identity
The silent conspiracy
I can tell you
Nothing you say is true
Rope-a-dope pope
The silent conspiracy
There is a devil
Swears no ill will
Holy church’s a pill
The silent conspiracy
I did I did made it plain
I’d never lie again
Rightly and nightly
The silent conspiracy
Turned on a spit
Devil was cumin –yet
Don’t troth a bed
The silent conspiracy
Fairy-tales in your head
Eternal mysteries instead
Fairy bumps and play dead
The silent conspiracy
Jesus has mercy
Sin among ourselves
Saved by the bell
The silent conspiracy
The devil and empty hands
I’m sure he laughs
At all the paths – we take
To avoid hell’s gates.
Wait! Wait! Wait!
Millstones and fate

I had to read this a few times and it gets better with each read. I'll come back to this later. Will also be googling a few words

Being so dirty never leaves
Being so dirty never leaves you free but neither does avoiding hell's gate. There's a strong catholic thread running through this, I guess such an upbringing leaves a stain on you which no amount of painful scrubbing can remove. Interesting piece, lots in it.
