Dear diary...Photo I took on

a woodland walk, of an old

uprooted tree. Just had to

capture my thoughts in a poem.

 

 

Been taken in by expressionless

appearance; this strange face of an

imaginary creature, a waxen skull all

withdrawn; an old root snatched from

the earth,

 

with unwavering breath I'm

visualizing combination of

beauty surrounded by native

familiars, then this beast with

dark bulbous eyes appears

mindful.

 

No hoofs can be seen in welter of

woodland floor, it stands like a

guardian of another realm; beckoning

me to enter where slithering worms

have no fear,

 

and I wonder what lurks in desolate

darkness! Unlike the real world's

essence – so methodical, needing

structure and uniformity,

 

my imagination submits to

interchanging domains;

where mystery's camouflaged...

seducing my consciousness to a

blind world of surreal awareness,

 

I think evocative tree's spirit in

darkness, is a whispering wanderer

on the breeze; reaching far beyond

this magical woodland; breaking

night's stillness.

I don't know if it's because I've just finished reading Turlough's story, but that pic looks exactly like a cow!

Hi insert,

there's definitely a likeness of a cow in the image. I think if Lewis Carroll hadn't written Alice In Wonderland, this beast would have taken my imagination into the darkness and into another strange world of fantasy.

From the otherside of the upturned tree the thick branches were actually like legs, but they were in another photo, as I couldn't fit the whole tree in, and I wanted to catch the main entrance as soon as I saw it.

I think I stood staring for about fifteen minutes entranced by what I was seeing.

It was a pleasure to share this poem and the photo.

that's very kind of you to say you thought it was nicely done. I tried to capture the spirit of what I was seeing. I don't think I've ever been so mesmerized by an uprooted tree before.

Hi Paul,

you are so right...having an imagination, especially in nature is the best, and like I said to insert, if Lewis Carroll hadn't written Alice In Wonderland, I'm sure that strange beast would have led my mind down into another world., surprise where many surprises would have awaited me.

I'm not sure I've fully understood this, Jenny. But your seem entranced by the odd shape of the upended wriggly roots of the large tree, and with that I empathise, and also the wonder they rouse of the goings-on where they have emerged from, imagining the 3-dimensional world underground! I love also seeing twisted roots partially exposed on banks, gnarled and knotted and gripping into the soil still so strongly. They have a beauty of their own. Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

like Lewis Carroll, my imagination was on overdrive. I felt so much of what he must have felt when imagining Alice chasing a rabbit down a hole.

You're right, I was so entranced by the root shapes and how they appeared, I stood gazing for quite a while, and saw a poem emerge, which was why I couldn't wait to get the photo developed. I don't think the poem would have been so apparent on its own.

I too love exposed roots on banks, and like you agree they have a beauty all of their own.

It's very kind of you to read this poem, and I appreciate you taking the time to let me know your thoughts.

That is a spooky looking tree! Your photo looks like it is a tunnel, with a face above like a watchful gargoyle

You're right, that's exactly what I thought Di, a spooky looking tree with an entrance to a tunnel...and yes it does look like there's a watchful gargoyle. I still find it fascinating how many things in nature can resemble something else. 

You always manage to recognise what I'm trying to put across. I'm so glad you liked this poem, and thank you so much for reading and letting me know.

Like in a fire or in the changing shapes of clouds, I can always so a multitude of forms in an old tree root. Your excellent words tell me that you do the same. I really enjoyed this.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who sees different shapes in trees. I don't think this poem would have held up had it not been for the photo. I especially like to look for faces in old oak trees...which have such characters.

Hi there, JP BROWN, hope life is treating you well.

Photography is such a great hobby, and isn't it a wonderful feeling when a photo turns out well? I've never been that brilliant at taking photos, up until I got this new camera, now when I can get out and about, it's a pleausre to capture those special moments.
