Two new eyes

Startled; staring out at

An old world.

Not knowing it's old.

 

Two new lungs

Taking their first gasps of air

Breathed a million times before,

But by whom?

 

Two new ears

To absorb

Words of adoration.

Isn't he lovely?

 

A new mind

On a journey to understand

The universe and its entire contents.

Wherever they may be.

 

Four new limbs

Setting foot

Beyond the womb's walls

To make a mark and earn a crust,

To be someone to love and trust,

To make those promises and mistakes,

To make hearts leap and maybe break,

To make a million cups of tea,

To make great journeys, cross the sea,

To make the most of what's beyond,

To make a wish and wave a wand,

To grow some veg, to till the land,

To play for Leeds or form a band,

To sing out loud, then even louder,

To make his family even prouder

Than at that moment he was born

To make a precious lifetime dawn.

 

A perfect little soul

To make more perfect little souls.

Life goes on,

Will go on,

But for this wee man

It's only starting.

 

Note: This is for my new grandson who arrived in the world last Sunday.

Very precious.

Starting the process again of contemplating the preciousness of a newborn baby three decades after our first batch of new born babies.

Thank you Jenny.

I already have a tiny grandaughter and three grown up kids but the feeling of pride has never diminished as each one has entered the world.

As life goes on some things never change.

A celebration indeed!

For me there is no finer thing in the world than a new baby to make the heart sing. It's even better being the grandfather rather than the father as this time round I don't have to get up in the middle of the night.

Thank you very much indeed. 

I haven't met the little fella yet as we live 3,000 kms apart. So I sent the poem to my son and he read it to his son and everybody smiled cried.

"To make a million cups of tea..." Yep, about right. A beautiful poem with appropriate optimism for life in general (apart from the bit about playing for Leeds). Paul :)

"To make a million cups of tea..." is a reference to the young fella's grandmother's habit. Making a million cups of tea is a bit of a family initiation ceremony ... on her side, of course.

And in terms of Glory Glory Leeds United, you've got to mention the optimism. Without that we'd have disappeared up our own tunnel a long time ago.
