The thatched roof and the
thick wooden beams
worn with hundreds of years
of use by generations
all a bit lopsided and the
foundation slightly sloped in
the rich soil
half timbering
floorboards slanting
woodstove well kept
attic with swallow's nest
generations of cottagers
vegetable patch
foot powered loom
Hollyhocks
pink , crimson and yellow
Woodbine hedgerow
surrounded by the farmer’s wheat fields
Let’s start again
whitewash the façade
treat the beams with beeswax
give the thatch a make-over
polish the loom
scrub the floorboards
let be the swallow's nest
sow the seeds
light up the woodstove
heat the kettle
a new beginning
a young dream
as we grow old

new Highhat Dear pia, Love the descriptions of the lovely cottage and woodstove and the kettle. Much needs re-pairing to-day,even ralationships, and families. I like cottages but found dark inside did you? Appealed to me. Wish you all the best for the competition.Mine I tried for fun, was an (IP) I have deleted word, but it's still on there. Would you remember the whistling kettle, we always as kids, blew it, left black mark round our mouth's. Take care.Oh! pop had a monkey he made on a stick pinch the sides, and it vaulted over the top. julie x

Yes the cottages are dark Julie but you are out in the garden when the sun shines and when you are inside it is dark outside too- then you light up the stove and put the kettle on and drink tea and are all snug in your little cottage. But I do remember blowing the kettle whistle. Ha ha ;0 Pia

Hi Pia :) I agree a really beautiful straight forward poem (which I love ) I also agree about the ending too, enchanting and never saw those words for the ending but great :))) It made me wish it was I, who had the beautiful home to work on :))) A well worthy winner Good Luck :))))) Keep Writing Keep Smiling :)))

Do you have any spare rooms in this lovely house for a weary traveller like myself? Even a tent in the garden would do me, just so I could spend all day admiring the house. Best of luck in the poetry comp.

Thanks OP for your wonderful comment. You bet in the summer you can pitch your tent on the lawn- there's a brook nearby as well- you can listen to the murmur as you fall asleep. ;)Pia
