Dear diary...although my

attempt to create a patch

of meadow didn't go to plan,

I will hope to try again next year.

These are my thoughts in a

poem.

 

 

 

 

My meditations at this

present moment are not

in wild woods or where

drowsy meadows are

graced with flowers,

 

for now affection leads

me within our garden

mantle of green; where

insects on wings hover

among grasses.

 

I gaze then with lighter

thoughts at shelter,

where under canopy of

trees we nestled from sun

and rain; realize visible

failure of blooms was

just a blithe oversight.

 

I attempt to imagine...

perhaps next year with

more careful planning,

nature's fine colours will

enhance these desires

outpouring

 

carried by buzz of bees,

their daily labours flit in

ecstasy...till overflowing

they return to hive

coated in sweetness

under late spring sky.

Hi Paul,

you know I just love sitting in our little den watching the bees go about their day. I'm not too dispirited not having the wild flowers though, because there are so many other shrubs that the bees love...so it's happy days. smiley

It seems you have something to watch anyway, and sounds restful. The differences in what flowers well each year seems rather unpredicatable, maybe timing of weather changes, or what gets going well first. Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

you are so right, there's always something to be grateful for in our garden, it can be very restful. 

I think the fact I just sprinkled the seeds amongst the grass maybe wasn't the right way to create a meadow. Isn't it amazing how birds can drop seeds and they can come up between paving cracks? We had poppies growing in places we never planted any.

I am sorry it didn't work out this year. My flowerbed was not so good, either. As Rhiannon says, weather is maybe the cause, though wildflowers do not like to be told what to do I have found :0) So, when they DO flower it is even more special!
However, I loved how your poem is not about disappointment, rather embraces what Nature HAS given you, all its beauties. Really enjoyed, both for the images, and the wisdom

Ah! That's very kind of you to say Di. I have to admit the garden is still a pleasure to be in, even without the wildflowers. I did have a scary moment some months back sitting in our den. It was so quiet and the bees were buzzing, but then they suddenly out of the blue stopped and went very still. Moments later the red arrows flew very,low over our garden...the noise was so loud my heart skipped a beat and I nearly jumped out of my skin. It felt like the end of the world because I didn't realize it was the red arrows until later. Eventually I managed to stand up, but I was shaking like a leaf and crying very emotionally.

When I got inside my partner wondered what was wrong. I told him what happened and when I eventually settled down, we did laugh about it, although these days I really don't like loud noises, I think I must have sensitive hearing. Hope you didn't mind me sharing this strange moment.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this poem and maybe next year we'll both be smiling at our wild flowers.

how terrifying! I would have been the same! (interesting how the bees stopped buzzing before you heard it, maybe they felt the vibrations do you think?) There is such a wrongness about sounds like that, as if they are tearing something that will never quite heal. I feel so much for birds and animals that live near where they launch rockets in America - on the radio it said one of the sites is near a wild bird sanctuary. I am sure you send out a warmth and peace and welcome to all your wild visitors. I like taking a book out, with Tina, too, but always end up watching birds and insects or clouds instead :0)

Good morning Di, thank you so much for your understanding. You are so right about the birds and all animals being scared. I don't know how they cope with rocket launches, it would terrify me.

The problem with the red arrows flying over, I had no idea it was them at the time, all I saw were shadows above the canopy of trees, and there hadn't been any warning either. The ground actually vibrated, and each time I think about it, I consider those poor people in countries where bombs go off.

I think you're right about the bees having knowledge before the event, it just shows how intelligent with great hearing they actually are..

I always hope like you that the birds feel welcome in the garden, and try and make it feel animal friendly.

There's nothing quite like a meadow as a place to lose yourself. We have more meadow than Julie Andrews had in The Sound of Music. We'll gladly lend you a bit of it.

These words stood out for me...

They're words that go through my mind all the time. And this is what gardens are all about. Never giving up and trying something different next time to meet the demands of your imagination. Trying to fit in with nature when nature usually wants to go off and do its own thing. I tell people that I love my garden because it's a place I can go where I don't have to think. Perhaps I'm lying, as my mind works overtime planning and imagining how things will look next year. 

I can tell from your words just how much you enjoy your garden. A lovely poem and I'm sure it's a lovely garden.

Hi Turlough,

it sounds like you've got all the right conditions for a thriving meadow...I bet the insects have a party over in your garden. wink

You know you're right about a garden being a place where you don't have to think too much. I quite often take a book to read, but always end up putting it down and checking out the sky, or the insects. Thankfully we have a lot of shrubs to sit amongst, because now I'm not so good with digging, or doing a lot of bending...these old bones sadly arn't what they used to be.

Nowadays I just tend to watch my partner busy with his pots of vegetables. He's been growing parsnips in large tubs and corn, + tomatoes, also potatoes. There's only two of us, so not much call for huge amounts, hence the containers.

I hope you have much success with your garden in the future and enjoy every moment of it.

Very big congratulations Jenny - what a beautiful poem! I'm sorry the Red Arrows made you jump. I live near a US airbase and there are often unwelcome surprises like that (some so big you wonder how they stay in the air!). I bet next year your meadow is just as you want it to be

Funnily enough we live near Fairford Air Base, and I've seen and heard the Red Arrows go over our garden many times, but I think it was the initial shock of having no warning, and to be quite honest because I was hidden, it sounded louder than normal...like they were literally just above my head and the tree line, It was very dramatic.
