Death by Selfie

strangely unaffecting to see
lives lost in this way
is that a shocking thing
to say?
guy falls from building
filming himself doing
handstands on the
parapet
selfie-taker eaten by lion
after climbing into the den
to impress his girlfriend
woman plucked lifelessly away
by a tree whilst leaning out of a train
for her TikTok followers to see
influencer fried whilst climbing
a pylon - 400,000 volts just to say
‘Try not to die this way’
tech-enabled narcissists -
understanding life's meaning
solely as expressed
in ‘hits’
vacuity monetized
have a heart, you say –
think of those left behind
in these tragedies
like they did?
did they once pause on
the brink to think about
their mothers telling people
who ask how their daughter
died ‘Don’t ask me… go check
her Instagram channel and see.’
less dreck in the gene pool
is how I see it
tell me about those needless deaths
in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan before
telling me how callous I am

I'm not unaffected by such
I'm not unaffected by such deaths, more angry and exasperated and desperately sorry for those who loved them. People have always done dangerous and downright stupid things, cocooned in a belief in their own invincibility. It's desperately sad.

The pointlessness of it all.
The pointlessness of it all. My bugbear is phones at gigs and art galleries. Utterly mindless.

Hi Harry, can't believe I
Hi Harry, can't believe I nearly missed this poem. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Back when I was younger, took risks, but like you said in one of your comments, it was between me and the friends I was with at the time...something we could share and think about how lucky we were to have got through it without getting hurt.
It's depressing to think these people go to such lengths for publicity, thinking it's the only way to get attention.
You make so many valid points, not only in your poem, but also in your comments.
Thank you for sharing and being so open in your feelings.
Jenny.
