A Fond Farewell

Many of my relatives and friends
gather together for various things:
a birthday or an engagement party
when betrothed will exchange rings;
a christening, a religious wedding,
a celebration of one's achievement
but most of all, following a demise,
to offer comfort during bereavement.

Once again the family will convene
to bid farewell to my dearest wife
who tried to repel the Grim Reaper
but was unable to hang on to life
Her passing, untimely, unexpected,
caused a lot of agonizing heartache.
Yet memory of her goodness remains
leaving joy, not sorrow, in its wake.

So sorry, Luigi. The longer you know someone, the harder the break, but so glad she'll left you good and happy memories. I remember catching a glimpse of her when you read at one of the zoom readings a little while ago. Rhiannon

Luigi I'm so very sorry for your loss, especially as it was unexpected and sudden. I'm glad you have your family to comfort you and to celebrate her life. Maybe when you feel ready you could write some of those happy memories?

Many thanks for your comforting words, Claudine. This is just a simple poem meant to acknowledge the joy and happiness I and our daughters experienced during he lifetime.

With due respect, Tom, you have misunderstood the purpose of this poem; this is not a joke. It is a personal tribute to my wife who has recently passed away.

So very sorry to hear this news, Luigi. I remember meeting Joy when she came with you to an ABC Reading in Nottingham several years ago. It was my first ABC event and I was terrified, and you and she were both so kind and helped me to feel I could be part of this writing family. I hope the many happy memories will bring comfort to you and your daughters.

Dear Jane, thank you very much. I recall that time in Nottingham when we all walked together toward our respective hotels and were looking forward to the next reading meeting which unfortunately did not take place due to the pandemic  I know that we had reading via zoom but somehow it doesn't seem to have the same effect.

I was so sorry to hear this news Luigi. My deepest sympathy goes out to you. I hope the memories that you've made together bring you some comfort at this time. I also wish for you strength and time to find comfort with not only your family, but also in your love of writing. Like insert said, it would be great to read about you and your wife.

Thank you, dearest Jenny. I wasn't at all sure whether to use the ABC platform to share my loss, as this short poem is purely a personal tribute to Joy and just an outlet for the heartache caused by her demise. We had 56 years of happy married life and am thankful for that. We went through a lot together and there must be some episode worth recounting.

Luigi, I am very sorry to hear this sad news, even in your elegant tribute, which you have done so well to craft when you must be desolate. I am glad you have a strong family to enfold you in love, and treasure of so many years of memories together. As others have said, I hope you are able to find strength also in writing, and would like very much to read accounts of episodes you shared

It was nice to read your kind, compassionate words Di. I do indeed feel desolate about the unexpected demise of my dear wife. It may seem indulgent on my part but posting this tribute to her was a way to partly cope with the loss. She was my biggest fan and keen to read everything I published, always encouraging and never criticising. I wonder what she would have thought of this effort of mine.
