A Partridge, A Pear Tree

Pear
blossom
lasts
just
a moment,
a message
of impermanence,
before its fruit which is
slower to ripen and sweeter
with age; transformed to an earthy
stickiness, to spice and soft curve,
a liquored slick to sweep from chins. Yet,
a partridge shuns the pear tree, takes no
pleasure in the pain of spined branches; this moon
bird has fallen once - the memory mulled in its blood.
So a partridge is humble, and does not presume to skies,
nests its clutches in a cinnamon soil, dances hidden,
flame-faced, in mists caught by hedgerows. And
they vanish alongside the disappearance of havens
of hawthorn and holly, though this is not magic,
more the knead of time, the squeeze into ever
decreasing space, where we, too, are
as transient as a pear's white flowers
and our own hobbled king.

I love the swelling rhythm of
I love the swelling rhythm of this, like a syrupy drip in itself
"fruit which is
slower to ripen and sweeter
with age; transformed to an earthy
stickiness, to spice and soft curve,
a liquored slick to sweep from chins" and you clean it off with the quickness of "yet". Genius
