Silver slivers wind their way

memory-wire threaded

through life’s everyday

by words loved-ones said.

Images beaded round and whole

capture a moment so long ago

 

The lace of our lives sewn

many-coloured silken thread

spun by loves we’ve known

never cut by distance or death.

Feelings remembered when old

as years finally take their grim toll

 

A rich tapestry wrapped around the heart

woven by a gentle finger-touch at the start

Thanks for bringing to my attention the name of Bruce Dawe who was unfamiliar to me.  I shall endeavour to delve into his work. The only Australian I knew of and whose poetry appealed to me was Clive James.

I would love to share the poem with you too and looked on the net to see if I could link it - although there's loads about him, not this particular poem.   I found it last year but can't remember where.

There are many amazing Australian poets who have inspired me.

G'day Rich, 

So pleased you enjoyed my words - especially the last line which reminds me of my poem written soon after the birth of my first child, my daughter.

''...you caused such pain, such draining of strength

yet, when you finally arrived, in just a second

all that had gone before was completely forgotten

and I held you to my breast, now calm

and gently with my forefinger caressed your tiny arm. "
